MACHECROUTE, Reviving a forgotten legend
Created for the Entre Rhône et Saône festival, the Mâchecroute revives a lost Lyon legend: that of an aquatic monster lurking beneath the Guillotière bridge, once blamed for the Rhône's devastating floods.
Jacques Rival brings it back to life on a monumental scale, but reverses its nature: the once-feared beast becomes a good-natured, colourful and mischievous monster, one that both children and adults now come looking for along the riverbanks.
The Mâchecroute starts from a blank slate: an oral legend with no fixed form, which Jacques Rival invents from scratch to give it a presence within the city.
